Magnificent Frigatebird - Fregata magnificens

Identification Tips:

  1. Length: 35 inches Wingspan: 90 inches
  2. Very large
  3. Chases other birds to steal their prey
  4. Effortlessly glides on long, pointed wings and long, forked tail
  5. Long, hooked bill

Adult male

  1. Entirely black plumage
  2. Red, inflatable throat sac

Adult female

  1. White breast
  2. Remainder of plumage black

Immature

  1. White head and breast
  2. Remainder of plumage black

Similar species:

With its huge size, long, pointed wings and forked tail the frigatebird is instantly recognizable even at long distances. It is most often seen soaring over coastal areas.
